If you wish to climb the academia ladder as a PhD student, through to Research Fellow, Associate Professor, or even Professor (at the very top!), then you'll need a doctoral degree in psychology.

A doctoral degree in psychology will help you earn a higher salary, but expect to experience more stress and workload strain due to ongoing pressure to publish academic journal articles. As you climb the ladder, the expectations grow and can be harder to sustain. I observed a lot of burnout in academia, while working in clinical trial research - which actually turned me off the idea of completing a PhD.

And trust me when I say, each year will feel like a sprint to the finish because you are juggling so many responsibilities across conducting your own research and placements.

If you're more interested in research, you may want to consider a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Psychology. If you study full time, PhD programs usually take three to four years to finish and require you to complete a dissertation. However if you are part-time, this can easily blow out to 8 years (I actually have several friends who are at the8 year mark, so yeah, it happens).

CONTROVERSIAL OPINION, but personally, if part time is the only way for you to complete your PhD, I would recommend looking at alternative career pathways. All of my friends who are at the six-to-eight-year mark are burnt out or resentful of how much of their youth has been spent working on a project with no income or reward. There are other ways to work in research and still earn money (e.g. Clinical TrialCoordinator, Research Assistant).

Applicants must be in good standing with the Psychology Board ofAustralia with no prior record of misconduct, however this is very rare. The APSwill examine the education history of foreign nationals with non-Australian degrees.
